Am I Fit Enough for Karate?
This is usually followed by questions such as, ‘will I get hurt?’ or ‘will I embarrass myself?’ At Toyakan Higashi Karate Club, we teach people of all different ages and abilities. To set your mind at ease, here is some additional information from our friendly karate instructors.
Fitness comes with time
While karate is a physically demanding art that does require a certain level of fitness, you don’t need to be fit to get started. When you sign up for karate classes, your instructor will take note of your starting fitness level and take every precaution to keep you safe. You should never be embarrassed about your fitness level or ability, remember we were all beginners once.
Feel free to prep
While it isn’t necessary to prepare for you first karate lesson, if you are feeling nervous, there are some basic exercises you can undertake to improve your fitness. To build your upper arm and chest strength, you can start doing daily push ups. Start with five, or as many as you can manage, a day and then build this number up week by week. You can also improve your stamina by doing some cardio training by hiking or jogging for medium distances.
Recognise your limits
At At Toyakan Higashi Karate Club, we will encourage you to push your psychical limits so you can improve your art and increase your overall fitness. While this is the case, we understand that everyone has a different level and capacity of fitness. Our classes are designed to build fitness gradually, but if you are struggling, or finding training to intense don’t force yourself. Be sure to let your instructor know and they will do their best to accommodate you.
